Pier 66 and Smart Growth

While some people want to say the recent city elections were about dramatically stopping growth, that does not hold water when you talk to a broad crosssection of our neighbors.

Smart Growth is a simple concept, and a big reason why Mayor Trantalis and Commissioner Glassman won resounding victories. It isn’t about stopping growth. It is about look at long term planning that includes “smart” approaches to infrastructure and traffic to make things better as we make forward progress.

After reading the Development Agreement on file with the city, it appears that is exactly what it does.

The question is not whether the city should do this. The question is why they aren’t doing it more!

I appreciate the concern of the dozen or so people who have spoken out on this issue. They were rightfully shell shocked by the Bahia Mar disaster.

This is different. This is the opposite. This is visionary planning. It’s what communities with far better development practices do on a daily basis.

And this is being proposed by a billionaire-owned family business who has a long-term, multi generational commitment to Pier 66 and our community.

They could make this commitment and investment anywhere. They chose here. It’s a good thing.

Enough of no. Let’s work together for a change. It’s time.
